Ansfelden, September 2, 2025 – Since August 29, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection has been imposing duties and taxes on every shipment. The previous exemption threshold of 800 U.S. dollars has been eliminated. As a result, several postal operators in Europe – including Austrian Post – have suspended shipping to the U.S. GLS Austria, however, stays the course: Austrian companies can continue sending parcels to the U.S., with delivery handled through its own GLS US network.
“For many domestic companies, the U.S. market is indispensable. They need planning security now – and that’s exactly what we offer,” says Christian Schöninger, Managing Director of GLS Austria. “We have always had the right digital processes in place. With complete customs data and the proper use of Incoterms, shipping to the U.S. with GLS remains possible – reliable, transparent, and at predictable costs.”
New Rules for Exporters
Since August 29, all shipments to the U.S. are subject to duties and taxes, regardless of value. The duty-free import threshold of up to 800 U.S. dollars no longer applies. GLS Austria’s business customers can send parcels using either Incoterm 10 DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) or Incoterm 20 DDU (Delivered Duty Unpaid). For smooth customs clearance, a commercial invoice with tariff numbers, a precise description of goods, and declared value is required. GLS handles clearance for shipments up to 5,000 U.S. dollars.
GLS with Its Own U.S. Network
While other parcel services are suspending shipments, GLS operates its own company in the U.S. “The headline ‘Postal operators suspend U.S. shipping’ is misleading, because trade has not been stopped – the rules have simply been tightened. Those who have their customs data under control can continue their U.S. business – and that’s exactly where we come in. We are deliberately sending a different signal: GLS remains a reliable partner for transatlantic trade,” explains Schöninger.
