Parcel service provider GLS has nearly doubled its European Out-of-Home (OOH) network within just 24 months. By the end of 2025, the network comprised around 130,000 ParcelShops and parcel lockers – compared to approximately 70,000 locations in 2023. With this expansion, the company is responding to changing delivery requirements in the B2C segment as well as increasing efficiency pressure on the last mile.

From September, GLS Austria will be one of the first companies to offer training in the new apprenticeship as local and distribution logistics specialist. It is geared towards the needs of the booming parcel industry and includes both practical and administrative activities.

Twenty years ago, GLS Austria became the first parcel service provider in Austria to open a ParcelShop. What started as an innovative idea has grown into a future-proof success story: today, the network comprises more than 900 locations across the country and plays a key role in ensuring stable delivery processes.

Since August 29, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection has been imposing duties and taxes on every shipment. The previous exemption threshold of 800 U.S. dollars has been eliminated. As a result, several postal operators in Europe – including Austrian Post – have suspended shipping to the U.S. GLS Austria, however, stays the course: Austrian companies can continue sending parcels to the U.S., with delivery handled through its own GLS US network.

Along with 31 companies, GLS Austria has joined an initiative of the Wirtschaftskammer Wien and is now – as part of the “Zero Emission Transport” project – delivering all parcels in the first and second districts of Vienna emission-free.
